Man Utd team news: OGS confirms double blow but 3 players to return for Wolves trip
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed a double blow ahead of Manchester United’s FA Cup clash with Wolves on Saturday but three players are set to return
Manchester United take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Saturday night in the quarter finals of the FA Cup.
Ahead of the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this morning and he’s provided a full team news and injury update including the latest on a number of his first team players.
Let’s start with a fresh blow as Solskjaer confirmed that Romelu Lukaku is a doubt for Man Utd’s trip to Wolves tomorrow after suffering a foot injury during last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.
The Belgian international will be assessed at Carrington this afternoon before a decision is made over his availability but it would be a big blow if Lukaku is ruled out as he’s been in excellent form in recent games.
However, Solskjaer had more positive news on Ander Herrera as the midfielder is expected to return to the squad this weekend after recovering from a hamstring injury that’s hampered him since the draw with Liverpool last month.
Jesse Lingard has also returned to full training after recovering from his own hamstring complaint that’s kept him on the sidelines in recent weeks while youngster Mason Greenwood could return to action after suffering from illness this week.
In a further boost for Man Utd, Phil Jones is available for selection again after recovering from an injury that has kept him on the sidelines since the win over Fulham at Craven Cottage over a month ago.
Solskjaer is expected to rotate his squad with Sergio Romero tipped to start in goal having played in all three of the previous rounds of the FA Cup but Ashley Young is suspended.
The caretaker United boss told ManUtd.com:
“We’re still getting players [back]. They’ve been training better this week so Jesse [Lingard] and Ander [Herrera] have been training. Rom[elu Lukaku] has a sore foot so he will be assessed this morning [Friday] so let’s see if he can join in. Phil Jones is back so we’re looking stronger.”
“Mason [Greenwood] has been ill, so he’s not trained this week. He might be training this morning so let’s see how he is.
“Sergio [Romero] been absolutely fantastic and he must have the world record for clean sheets in the percentage of games he’s played. He’s kept nine [clean sheets] in the last 11 games, or something like that, in the FA Cup so that’s fantastic.”
Solskjaer also provided an update on Alexis Sanchez and revealed the attacker is due to return from Barcelona on Sunday where he’s been undergoing treatment for a knee injury that he picked up against Southampton earlier this month.
There was speculation suggesting Sanchez may return after the international break, however, Solskjaer says he’s still a few weeks away from being ready so the United boss doesn’t feel the attacker will be available until towards the end of April when they face Everton, Man City and Chelsea.
Solskjaer told the Manchester Evening News:
He’s coming back on Sunday, he’s not been on grass yet, he’s been seeing his people in Barcelona he’s still a few weeks away so if we get to round about Everton, City, Chelsea that period he’ll probably be available.
United will be looking to bounce back from their defeat at Arsenal last week as they head to Molineux to take on a decent Wolves side that sit seventh in the table after drawing at Chelsea last weekend, so Solskjaer will know they’ll have to be at their best to progress to the semi-finals.
