Sadio Mane scored twice as Liverpool beat Wolves 2-0 at Anfield but it wasn’t enough to claim the Premier League title.
It was a reasonably slow start from the Reds as Wolves were content to sit back with men behind the ball and try to hit Liverpool on the counter-attack but Jurgen Klopp’s men didn’t have to wait too long to break the deadlock.
A neat exchange in midfield sent Trent Alexander-Arnold clear down the right wing and the full-back picked out Mane with a pin-point cross to allow the Reds attacker to sweep home for 1-0 in the 17th minute.
The game went a bit flat as news filtered through that Manchester City were dominating Brighton 4-1 and the title was gone which gave Wolves confidence with the visitors going close to equalising.
However, Liverpool finished strongly and Mane sealed the three points in the 81st minute as he poked home from close range to make it 2-0. That goal drew him level with team-mate Mohamed Salah and Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the race for the Golden Boot.
There were to be no more goals so Liverpool finished the season second on an incredible 97 points – just one point behind City who defended their title with a 4-1 victory at Brighton.
