Tottenham Hotspur: Early Season Roundup Under Ange Postecoglou

We look at how Tottenham Hotspur have got on during the early stages of the 2023/24 season under new manager Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham Hotspur appointed a new manager for their 2023/24 Premier League campaign, Ange Postecoglou. It was termed as a disastrous last season for Spurs as they failed to qualify for the European football for the first time since their 2009/10 campaign. They ended up in the top table, but as they are considered to be a part of the big six in the Premier League, an eighth-place finish was a disappointment for the Spurs fans.

Ange Postecoglou took over Tottenham Hotspur this summer and is reportedly signed on a 2-year contract. The higher-ups will be expecting at least a top-four finish from this Spurs side.

Tottenham have already played five games in their 2023/24 Premier League campaign up till the International break. From this sample size of 5 games, let’s identify who have been the biggest winners for Tottenham Hotspur so far.

The international break has come just at the wrong time for Tottenham, as they just beat Burnley 5-2 and were looking deadly poised for more 3-pointers. The wait of fans is over as the international break is done with and Tottenham are back in action at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It will be an ideal time for Spurs fans to grab some Tottenham tickets, as their team is looking ominous to gain maximum points with their current devastating form.

Now, let’s talk a bit about the winners who have contributed to the amazing Tottenham start this season so far:

Ange Postecoglou

It is expected after a new manager takes over the reigns of a club that good results will take time. However, much to the delight of Tottenham Hotspur’s fans, the team has almost immediately started delivering goods. It seems as if the team have understood Ange Postecoglou’s ideology and instructions and are delivering on the pitch.

Ange will be wary of the fact that a long season is to follow. This performance is just the start of the journey, and they should be aiming to go higher from here on.

To be critical of Postecoglou’s early run so far, one will see the dent of crashing out of Carabao Cup. The defeat away to Fulham cannot be overlooked, as winning a silverware would have been a great motivation for the players. The critics are of the opinion that the rotation policy cost Tottenham the game, as they lost on penalties. If the first-choice lineup had started the game, the result could have been in the favour of Tottenham Hotspur. This remains to be seen how Ange Postecoglou prioritizes FA CUP games in future.

There are still more goals to fight for, and fans will be cheering for the 58-year-old and his players.

Central Defenders – Cristian Romero & Micky van de Ven

Although Postecoglou is known for attacking style of play, therefore the key focus will always be on the attacking players. However, the centre backs have been able to steal some of the spotlight with their pivotal defensive plays.

Cristian Romero and the new signing of Postecoglou, Micky van de Ven have been able to form a good enough understanding amongst them which has resulted in good defensive performances from Tottenham Hotspur.

Cristian Romero has not only been delivering on the back end but has already scored two goals for his side. His goal against Burnley has been an absolute stunner. Micky van de Van has been giving the vibes of a street smart defender and his brilliant chemistry with Romero seems to give a positive signal for the rest of the season.

Having conceded only four goals in starting four games with two clean sheets against Manchester United and Bournemouth, this has been a good start from the two, and the expectation bar will be higher from there on.

Destiny Udogie

Udogie’s Premier League start has given the impression that Premier League was made for him. He seems to have settled into the Premier League flawlessly. Udogie was brought into the club in August 2022 but was immediately sent to Udinese for a season-long loan stint.

Wait of one year has been worth it after seeing what the left-back has to offer for Tottenham. His impressive performances in the forward plays bode well with Postecoglou’s attacking style of play. The Italian left-back made an impressive mark away at Brentford. Much more is expected from the 20-year-old.

Yves Bissouma

Yves Bissouma was also signed in the 2022/23 campaign under Fabio Paratici. His time in Brighton & Hove Albion was outstanding, but for some reason, Tottenham wasn’t able to see the best of him. A 3 month injury time also played its part. It was promising to see that Bissouma ended his last season on a positive note. It seemed as if he carried his last season’s form into this season and leveled up a notch.

To be able to see him deliver his best every coming week, just as he was delivering for Brighton & Hove Albion has been a refreshing sight for Tottenham fans. Bissouma managed to pick up two Player of the match awards in the first two Tottenham’s games this season.

James Maddison

Probably the most hyped signing of Tottenham this season has been James Maddison. James Maddison was supposed to fill the void in the midfield created by the departure of Christian Eriksen in 2020. It would not be an understatement to say that he has been the star of Tottenham’s season so far.

James Maddison was signed from Leicester after they were relegated last season. He has been the key piece of Postecoglou’s game plan.

With two goals and two assists already to his name, James Maddison has been the shining star of Tottenham’s early season run.

The kind of free-flowing and progressive style of play that Ange Postecoglou wants to implement is complimented brilliantly by James Maddison. His speed in transition plays, to go with his impressive thinking ability on the pitch, is pivotal for Spurs to catch teams on the counter. The build-up play in the 5th goal against Burnley is a clincher.

James Maddison has the ability to manipulate defenders into committing mistakes, which opens up the possibilities of chance creation. Defenders tend to get frustrated with his intuitive plays, and he has it in him to draw fouls, much like Jack Grealish does it for Manchester City.

Ange Postecoglou must have been proud of his choice to bring Maddison to his side. This much early into the season, but he has become the go-to man for Tottenham Hotspur.

With the team missing out on European Football last time, it will be interesting to see how Ange Postecoglou makes use of his crown jewel to get his side back into European Football.

These are exciting times for Tottenham supporters, and fans will be eager to get the front row Tottenham tickets. If the fans are unable to grab tickets from the official website, there is the option of utilizing secondary ticket markets. These secondary markets play a pivotal role in the football world, providing opportunities for fans to get access to in-demand or sold-out tickets. It also offers the ticket holders to get some return on their investment if they can’t attend a game due to some reason.
