Simon Phillips has reported that Chelsea are expected to be in the transfer market for a midfielder during the summer transfer window and have identified Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton as their ‘no. 1 transfer target’.

Wharton has gone from strength to strength lately at Selhurst Park, having also emerged as a contender to play in the World Cup for England. He is valued at £52 million on Transfermarkt, although his asking price might be significantly higher.

Wharton an ideal long-term investment

Adam Wharton promises to be a a brilliant long-term investment for Chelsea. The 22-year-old has played exceptionally for Crystal Palace, and his exploits in the Premier League have earned him widespread interest from elsewhere in England.

He is a superb playmaker, particularly lauded for his excellent technique, reading of the game and press resistance. Wharton excels in conducting play from deeper-lying positions on the pitch with his ability to make line-breaking passes.

Barring Chelsea, the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid have all been linked with the English international in recent weeks but the Blues could hold the upper hand for his services as they can offer him a lengthy contract and good salary.

In recent times, Chelsea have also emerged as a solid destination for youngsters to develop and Wharton might leverage the opportunity of joining the Londoners, especially if rumours surrounding Enzo Fernandez’s potential departure bear fruit.
