Who Must Stay, Who Must Go: Liverpool’s Keeper & Defence
Here’s my assessment on who should be shipped out and who must be kept at Anfield in the coming transfer window.
Goalkeepers
Pepe Reina
Perhaps no doubt about opinion on whether he should stay or go among Liverpool fans. The Spanish goalkeeper has been in scintillating form after another great season between the sticks at Liverpool FC. Along with that, he’s got that wonderful eye for a pass that sets Liverpool off very quickly to start counter-attacks.
My Verdict: Stay
Brad Jones
Liverpool’s second choice goalkeeper, and I guess when you have Pepe Reina in between the sticks, you don’t really get that many chances to shine. Just look at the stats, Reina has played in all 37 matches so far. But Brad Jones has some experience in the Premier League, and it doesn’t really hurt having backup.
My Verdict: Doesn’t Matter
Defenders
Glen Johnson
The Englishman’s versatility has been key for Liverpool this season, with his ability to slot in at left back being vital to Liverpool’s return to form this year. Very pacey and with a good eye for a cross, Liverpool are going to need him for next season.
My Verdict: Stay
Martin Kelly, John Flanagan and Jack Robinson
All being fullbacks, I decided to put them all in a single category for this. Liverpool’s future looks bright with their academy producing some of their finest talents in Jay Spearing (whom graduated a few years back), and these 3. These guys are keepers.
My Verdict: Stay
Jamie Carragher
No explanation required here.
My Verdict: Stay
Martin Skrtel
Perhaps Liverpool’s most consistently around playing defender and although he has the tendacy to sometimes bring people down way to often, Skrtel is still your no-nonsense defender.
My Verdict: Stay
Paul Konchesky
It all went wrong for the English left back, a ‘Hodgson signing’ (although Meireles isn’t counted here) meaning he must almost certainly go.
My Verdict: Get out already
Daniel Agger
Well, this one was a hard call for me, talented, but he seems like his bones are made out of some cotton wool. Well, it’s very hard to call for me.
My Verdict: Stay (Unless a big money deal comes in)
Fabio Aurelio
As like Agger, Aurelio simply can’t play a game of football without a hamstring tearing up or his knees being knocked up. On his day, he can be a brilliant crosser and as good as anybody, and perhaps the best at his trade, but it’s time to go, for good.
My Verdict: Go
Sotoris Kyrgiakos
The lumbering center back that all opponents dread/love seeing. On the plus side, he’s got a brilliant header, but he’s simply too slow for the fast paced English game. Turning 32, I would expect him to leave in the summer to make way for a younger replacement.
My Verdict: Go
