Jan Vertonghen – Arsenal Are Obviously A Team I Would Sign For
Reported Tottenham target Jan Vertonghen is open to a move to Arsenal this summer, according to Sky Sports News, so a possible transfer tussle could ensue.
Tottenham target Jan Vertonghen is open to a move to Arsenal this summer, according to Sky Sports News.
They report that Spurs are thought to be leading the race for the Ajax defender, who’s contract expires next summer and he has made it clear he won’t be extending, but the Belgian defender is quoted as saying he would be open to a move to Arsenal this summer.
Sky claim that Ajax are resigned to losing Vertonghen and are already lining up potential replacements for him, with FC Twente centre-back Douglas named as a target. Here is what Vertonghen said when asked about a potential move to the Gunners:
“My agent knows what clubs I’m willing to go to. Arsenal are obviously one of them. Ajax are busy trying to find solutions to replace me.”
“Who wouldn’t want to play football at a top club in England? If a nice club (is interested) I will hear about it from my agent.
“But first I want to concentrate fully on the title race.” Vertonghen is quoted as saying on Sky Sports News
The 24-year-old was also at the Emirates last week to watch Arsenal’s 3-0 win over AC Milan after being invited by international team mate Thomas Vermaelen, so a battle for the defender between the North London rivals looks a real possibility.
Where will he end up? Well it’s highly likely he will be plying his trade in the Premier League next season, as the player has made it clear he would like to test himself in England. So Tottenham and Arsenal must be considered as strong options.
But do the Gunners need him? They have Vermaelen, Koscielny and Mertesacker vying for two central defensive places, so it’s hard to see where Vertonghen would fit in. He can play at left back, so maybe there?
Tottenham on the other hand will certainly be in the market for a centre back in the summer. They need a long-term replacement for King, while Dawson and Gallas have been blighted by injury problems in recent months leaving Kaboul as their only reliable defender.
Vertonghen may want to link-up with Vermaelen at Arsenal, but i can see him playing for the white half of North London next season.
