Is Wayne’s World about to turn red?

Written by Jack Kitson.

With Liverpool lacking in options following the sales of Fabio Aurelio and more recently the departure of Emiliano Insua, The Reds have reportedly turned their attention to Wayne Bridge. Speculation is growing that the former Chelsea and Southampton player is on his way out of Manchester City, after it was recently revealed that the Manchester club have captured the signature of Serbian left-back Aleksandar Kolarov for £17million.

It is no secret that Bridge, aged 29, has endured a problematic season. Whether this is due to a combination of irregular football and external matters or simply being unable to adjust to the demands and pressure placed upon his shoulders, is open to debate. At Manchester City he has struggled for both form and fitness and not to mention the psychological affects of the whole John Terry affair. At previous club Chelsea, despite winning a number of trophies, at no point did Bridge even come close to wrestling the left-back position away from Ashley Cole.

I have no hesitation in stating that Bridge enjoyed his best spell of football at Southampton, where he even managed a run of 113 consecutive games for the club, an impressive tally for any player at any level. Now, there’s no doubt in my mind that if he can rekindle some of the passion and consistency he showed at Southampton, he could potentially be a welcome asset to Roy Hodgson’s squad. But, and this is a big but, he becomes 30 next month, so age wise he could be considered a bit of a gamble. However, a change of scenery may just be the antidote that Bridge needs to recapture some of the form he showed at Southampton and on the rare occasions he was given an opportunity at Chelsea.

It would be interesting to hear if you Liverpool fans would welcome a move for the Man City left-back? Or alternatively, who you think would be an adequate replacement for the recent departures?
