Arsenal Chief Heading To Brazil To Push Through Deal For Brazilian Defender

Arsenal have held talks with Gremio over a move for defender Bressan and will send chief negotiator Dick Law to Brazil to try and push through a deal.

As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Gooner Mac brings us news of Arsenal’s interest in a defender.

Arsenal have held talks with Gremio over a move for defender Bressan and will send chief negotiator Dick Law to Brazil to try and push through a deal for the talented youngster, according to reports today.

Bressan – full name Matheus Simonete Bressaneli – has emerged as one of the most highly rated young centre-backs in Brazil after a hugely impressive season with Gremio following his move from Juventude in December 2012.

It seems the 21-year-old has caught the eye of Arsenal scouts and a move to the Emirates could now be on the cards, with the Metro citing reports coming out of South America that claim we’ve already held initial talks with Gremio over a potential move.

Those discussions must have gone well as the newspaper suggests that Arsene Wenger will now send chief negotiator Dick Law to Brazil to try and wrap up the deal, although no potential transfer fee has been mooted.

With Bacary Sagna leaving on a free transfer when his contract expires and doubts continuing over the future of Thomas Vermaelen, Wenger is expected to bring in another centre-back this summer and it looks like Bressan is a real possibility.

A raw youngster like him would make sense as we need a player who will be content at being fourth choice behind the likes of Mertesacker, Koscielny and possibly Vermaelen, and can will learn from his more experienced  team-mates before eventually taking over in a few years.

The main problem with Bressan’s signing is that he may struggle to get a work permit as he’s yet to earn any caps for the senior Brazilian national side. The FA are starting to clamp down on the number of work permits they hand out to try and increase the amount of English players, particularly in the Premier League, so we may find it difficult to persuade them Bressan has the ‘exceptional talent’ they are looking for.
