Chelsea Team News: Hiddink Confirms Quadruple Injury Blow + Cahill Faces Late Test
Guus Hiddink has confirmed that he’ll be without four first team regulars due to injury against Swansea while Gary Cahill also faces a late fitness test.
Interim Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink has given Chelseafc.com a team news and injury update ahead of this weekend’s trip to face Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.
Unfortunately the Dutchman confirmed a quadruple blow with first team regulars John Terry, Nemanja Matic, Loic Remy and Eden Hazard all ruled out through injury.
Terry missed last week’s resounding 4-0 victory over Aston Villa after picking up an Achilles problem and Hiddink has confirmed that his skipper will once again be absent against Swansea tomorrow.
Matic was an unused substitute at Villa Park last weekend and the Serbian international will now miss out entirely due to bruising on his lower leg, but the Chelsea boss hopes to have the midfielder back for next week’s clash with Manchester City.
Remy limped out of the game against Villa after suffering a groin injury during the first half and Hiddink has confirmed the French international may now not play again this season.
In a further blow for the defending Premier League champions, playmaker Hazard will continue on the sidelines with a hip injury that has caused the Belgian international trouble over the past few weeks.
So Chelsea will be without four key players due to injury while Hiddink’s options in defence could be further limited if Gary Cahill fails to pass a late fitness test after suffering a tendon injury while away with the England squad last month.
In his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Wales, Hiddink told the clubs website this afternoon:
‘We have a few injured players so we will bring in some youngsters,’
‘John Terry is still not available, he has a little problem with his Achilles like last week. He’s been on the training pitch, doing his exercises, but he’s not fully recovered. Costa is out (suspended), as you know, Hazard is out, Matic will be out and Remy is out. Nevertheless we will bring in some youngsters as we did last week.’
‘I don’t know when he [Remy] will be recovered. It’s a groin problem but it will last. When you have that problem you cannot train properly.’
‘We’ll see this afternoon [on Cahill], we’ll do a test to see if he’s fit. It’s a bit of a tendon problem in his hip. He trained yesterday and we’ll see how he reacts to what was an intense session.’
In addition to the injury absentees, Chelsea will also have to make do without the services of top scorer Diego Costa as he serves the final game of his two-game ban following his antics against Everton last month.
