Manchester United are confident that a £40m bid will be enough to persuade Tottenham Hotspur to cash-in on Eric Dier this summer, according to the Mirror.
Jose Mourinho is gearing-up for a busy summer in the transfer market as the Portuguese coach looks to build a squad capable of being genuine title contenders next season.
A new defensive midfielder is on the agenda as Michael Carrick is out-of-contract at the end of June and United have been strongly linked with a move for Dier in recent months.
The 23-year-old joined Spurs from Sporting Lisbon in 2014 predominantly as a centre-back and has spent much of the season playing on the right hand side of a back three.
Dier is also more than comfortable playing in his preferred central midfield role but has struggled to establish himself in the position with Mauricio Pochettino favouring Victor Wanyama in his starting eleven.
The England international signed a new five-year contract last September worth £50,000-a-week and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy recently told the Supporters Trust there were no plans to improve the terms of player contracts.
Levy is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“DL [Levy] said all players were under contracts, contracts they were happy to sign at the time.
“They would be expected to honour those contracts. They wouldn’t have had a reduction if things had gone badly. DL said no player would be sold who Tottenham didn’t want to sell for non-footballing reasons.”
Dier could earn substantially more if he moved to Old Trafford and the Mirror claim the versatile defender is poised to be one of the first players to test Levy’s resolve this summer.
A rift could be on the horizon and the newspaper says that United are confident a £40m bid would be enough to persuade Tottenham to cash-in on Dier at the end of the season.
Levy is renowned for being a tough negotiator and no doubt he’d be reluctant to do business with a rival such as United but if Dier becomes unsettled due to his wage demands not being met at White Hart Lane, it could be difficult for Spurs to keep hold of him.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but I think this potential deal is one we should keep a close eye on and Dier would be an excellent signing if United manage to lure him to Manchester this summer.
