Liverpool are eyeing a shock raid on Chelsea to sign £40m-rated goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois but they’ll face stiff competition from Real Madri, according to reports in Italy via TeamTalk.
Courtois has developed in to one of the best keepers in Europe since joining Chelsea from Genk in 2011 and he’s also established himself in the Belgian national team with 54 caps to his name so far.
However, the 26-year-old’s future at Stamford Bridge is in serious doubt as Courtois has just one year left on his current contract and has so far failed to agree terms over an extension.
Chelsea have been desperate to tie the keeper down to a long-term deal but TeamTalk are citing a report from Gianluca Di Marzio that claims Courtois has informed the club that he won’t be signing a new contract.
His situation has alerted some of Europe’s top clubs with the Sky Italia journalist claiming that Liverpool have now joined Real Madrid in the race to sign the Belgian international this summer.
Jurgen Klopp is in the market for a new number one after Loris Karius made two costly mistakes in the Champions League final defeat to Madrid and the Reds have been linked with the likes of Jan Oblak and Alisson Becker.
It looks like Klopp has now added Courtois to his list of targets and TeamTalk says Chelsea are expected to cash-in if £40m is put on the table as they don’t want to lose him for nothing in 12 months time.
However, Liverpool face a tough fight to lure Courtois to Anfield as Madrid are the firm favourites to secure his signature and the player himself has admitted he wants to return to the Spanish capital to be closer to his family.
Courtois is quoted as saying by TeamTalk in February:
“My personal situation is related to the city of Madrid,” Courtois said.
“My two children live there with their mum. I have my daughter every day on FaceTime. She often tells me that she misses me. My son is still too small to communicate like that.
“Whenever I have the opportunity, I try to return to Spain. As a situation, it is not always easy. Yes, my heart is in Madrid. It is logical and understandable.”
It would certainly be an audacious move by Liverpool if they attempt to sign Courtois and he’d be a huge upgrade on Karius and Simon Mignolet – who’s expected to leave this summer after falling out of favour.

However, Chelsea would no doubt rather sell abroad rather than to a domestic rival and Courtois is keen to return to Madrid so I expect he’ll join the European champions if he does leave west London this summer.
