The Premier League transfer window may be closed but European clubs can still buy from English teams and managers are planning for the future so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip. Today, Man Utd will fight Man City over Ruben Neves…
Manchester City are hoping to sign Ruben Neves but angry Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is ready to fight for the £60m-rated Wolves star’s signature, according to Goal.
Neves came through the youth ranks at Porto after joining the Portuguese giants as a kid and emerged as one of the most exciting young midfielders in European football before making a shock switch to Wolves in the Championship in 2017.
The 21-year-old was outstanding during his first season in English football to help fire Wolves to the top flight after they ran away with the Championship title and his performances attracted interest from the upper echelons of the Premier League.
Goal claim Man City explored the possibility of signing Neves during the closing stages of the summer window with the club’s sporting director Txiki Begiristain meeting with the midfielders agent Jorge Mendes to discuss a potential deal.
The report says Neves would have been keen on a move to the Etihad but Wolves and Mendes made it clear a deal this summer was impossible as the club had promised to keep hold of their star man this season.
Goal claims City are continuing to pursue a transfer ahead of the January window and hope to persuade Mendes to strike a deal, with Wolves expected to demand around £60m for the Portuguese international.
However, the champions will face stiff competition for his signature as the report says Man Utd are also keen on Neves and will battle their rivals if the player is available for transfer either in January or next summer.
The outlet goes on to state that Jose Mourinho is angry with Mendes – who’s also his agent – for showing a willingness to deal with City despite knowing of United’s interest in signing Neves.
It’s going to be interesting to see how things develop over the coming months but it looks like United and City are ready to do-battle over Neves and Pep Guardiola will be determined not to lose out again.
