Manchester United are set to table a record £84m bid for Kalidou Koulibaly as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to finally sign the Napoli centre-back this summer, according to reports in Italy via the Metro.
Solskjaer is gearing-up for a busy few months as he looks to revamp a squad that finished sixth in the Premier League last season and improving his defence is a priority after United conceded 54 goals in the league alone.
Koulibaly has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and it seems the Senegalese international is once again a prime target with reports in Italy suggesting United are ready to table a huge opening offer for the powerful centre-back.
The Metro are citing Corriere dello Sport as claiming Man Utd have an £84m bid prepared for Koulibaly and are ready to test Napoli’s resolve by putting their proposal firmly on the table.
That kind of money would represent a world record fee for a defender as it would trump the £75m Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk, however, it still might not be enough to tempt Napoli into a deal.
The Corriere dello Sport report, as pictured above, claims United’s impending £84m [€95m] offer won’t be enough to meet Napoli’s asking price so the Manchester giants will have to dig a little deeper if they want to get a deal agreed.
Koulibaly has developed into one of the best centre-backs in the world over the past few years so he’d be an excellent signing if United could manage to get a deal done this summer.
The 27-year-old would be a major upgrade on the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, and he could form an excellent partnership with Victor Lindelof if he made a move to Old Trafford.

However, Napoli are under no pressure to sell as Koulibaly’s contract still has four years left to run so United will have to pay a huge sum to convince the Italian’s to cash-in on their star man this summer.
