Managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads during the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, the latest on Man Utd’s pursuit of Sean Longstaff…
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has instructed his Manchester United bosses to meet Newcastle’s £20m plus add-ons asking price so they can sign Sean Longstaff this week, according to the Daily Star.
Solskjaer has wasted no time strengthening his squad this summer as he’s already snapped-up highly-rated winger Daniel James from Swansea while right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka completed his big-money move from Crystal Palace over the weekend.
However, the United boss reportedly wants up to three more new faces through the door this summer and Solskjaer is keen to have most of his new recruits on board before the squad jet off for their pre-season tour on July 8th.
Man Utd are in the market for a central midfielder as Marouane Fellaini left the club in January while Ander Herrera has walked away on a free transfer after running down his contract and Longstaff has been touted as a prime target in recent weeks.
Reports suggested United were ready to table an opening bid of around £15m but the Daily Star says Solskjaer has asked executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to meet Newcastle’s asking price of £20m up front and a further £5m in add-ons so they can get the deal wrapped-up swiftly.
The newspaper says Solskjaer is desperate to make Longstaff his third summer signing and knows if United can get a deal agreed this week then the midfielder will be able to join the rest of the squad on the plane to the Far East next week.
Longstaff is a lifelong Newcastle fan and is a product of their youth system but the Daily Star says he’s considering his future at St James’ Park following Rafa Benitez’s exit as it was the Spaniard who gave him his first team debut last season.
The report claims Man Utd are ready to hand the 21-year-old with a lucrative long-term contract worth around £75,000-a-week and hope that will be enough to lure him away from his boyhood club.
