Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Racing Santander defender Jorge Salinas, as per The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell.
Since moving to Old Trafford from Southampton, Luke Shaw has had numerous fitness problems over the years. Still, he has continued to be the first-choice left-back.
Patrick Dorgu was purchased from Lecce as a potential long-term replacement for Shaw, but the Dane has been displaying his best as a winger under Michael Carrick.
On the other hand, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can provide cover on the left side if needed, but they are more comfortable as right-backs. So, United are seemingly planning to sign a new left-back, with Shaw’s existing deal set to run until next summer.
Now, on the latest episode of Talk of the Devils podcast, Whitwell reports that Man Utd have identified Salinas as a potential alternative option to Lewis Hall to reinforce the left-back position, and the 19-year-old has a £16m release clause.
Therefore, he would be a lot cheaper option than the Newcastle United star, while Salinas is represented by super agent Jorge Mendes.
Whitwell said:
“Jorge Salinas is on the list of potential options [alternatives to Lewis Hall at left-back]. I think he’s got a £16M release clause so he’d be a lot cheaper. Represented by Jorge Mendes, let’s see what shapes up.”
Salinas to Man Utd
Salinas is a left-footed left-back by trait but is also comfortable in the LCB position if needed. He is quick, technically sound, can make surging runs from deep, reads the game well and is efficient in defensive contributions.
The youngster showed glimpses of his qualities last term, registering seven assists and keeping as many clean sheets in 33 La Liga 2 appearances. Moreover, he helped his side gain promotion.
The Spaniard is a talented player and possesses high potential. So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Man Utd with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Old Trafford club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services before the September 1st transfer deadline.
Meanwhile, Man Utd have upgraded the midfield department by purchasing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans from Chelsea and Aston Villa, respectively, this summer.
