Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, as per TEAMtalk.
After finishing third in the Premier League under Michael Carrick, optimism was high ahead of this season. The Red Devils even bolstered the squad by signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans earlier this summer.
However, the 20-time English champions have endured a dire start to this Premier League campaign, losing 2-0 to newly promoted side Hull City last weekend.
Amid this situation, the transfer window remains open, and United have also signed Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion to upgrade the midfield further. Moreover, Man Utd reportedly want a new left-back, with Luke Shaw’s existing deal set to run until next summer.
Now, TEAMtalk state that Man Utd could sell Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee before next week’s transfer deadline. So, they could make a move for a new forward and have been offered the chance to sign Mateta.
The 29-year-old is keen on leaving Crystal Palace to take the next step in his career, and his representatives have started exploring options to find a suitable destination for him.
Apart from United, Tottenham have also received the opportunity to sign the Frenchman. Although they have bolstered the frontline by purchasing Savinho and Omar Marmoush, Spurs want a new forward.
Battle
The report state that Aston Villa have also been offered the chance to sign Mateta, while Atlético Madrid and Saudi Arabian clubs are interested in him.
Although Mateta has entered the final 10 months of his current contract, Crystal Palace ideally don’t want to let him leave late in this transfer window unless his potential suitors match their valuation.
Mateta is a 6ft 4in tall right-footed striker. He is quick, strong, good in the air, efficient in finishing off his chances, and also works hard without possession.
The Frenchman, valued at around £26m by Transfermarkt, is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Man Utd or Tottenham should either club purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club or the Old Trafford club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services.
