Everton are reportedly interested in signing Sunderland star Trai Hume, as per ESPN.
Since moving to the Stadium of Light from Linfield FC back in 2022, the 24-year-old has established himself as an undisputed starter. Having helped his side gain promotion during the 2024/25 campaign, he displayed promising performances in the Premier League last term.
In 40 appearances across all competitions, Hume made three goal contributions and kept nine clean sheets. Moreover, he helped his side qualify for the Europa League.
Having proven his worth in club football, the defender has secured his place in the Northern Ireland national team.
Now, ESPN report state Hume’s recent eye-catching performances have attracted the attention of several clubs across Europe. Everton are interested in him, while clubs from Spain and Germany are also eyeing a move.
Although the 24-year-old’s existing deal is set to run until 2030, Sunderland are prepared to cash-in on him late in this window for a fee of around £20m.
Hume is a right-footed versatile player. He is a right-back by trait but is also comfortable on the opposite side. Moreover, he can provide cover on the right flank if needed. He is quick, can deliver crosses from the wing, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
Everton have struggled with right-back issues over the last few years. Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson were the specialist right-back options the Toffees had, but they struggled with fitness problems.
Hume to Everton
So, Jake O’Brian provided cover in the RB position, although he is a towering centre-back by trait. On the other hand, James Garner played on the right side of the defence amid O’Brian’s absence.
Coleman has left the club as a free agent, while Patterson has entered the final year of his current contract. So, Everton are seemingly looking to finally buy a new right-back.
Hume is a talented player and has proven his worth in the Premier League in recent times. He isn’t even a finished article yet; therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Everton with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Merseyside club eventually opt to secure his services late in this window.
