Man Utd maintain an interest in signing Newcastle’s Lewis Hall

Manchester United reportedly remain keen on signing Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall, as per the Daily Mail.

Since moving to Old Trafford from Southampton, Luke Shaw has had numerous fitness problems over the last decade. Still, he has continued to be the Red Devils’ first-choice left-back.

Surprisingly, the 31-year-old started every Premier League match last campaign but has endured a disappointing start this season, conceding four goals in two matches.

Patrick Dorgu was purchased from Lecce last year as a potential long-term replacement for the Englishman. However, he has been featuring as a winger under Michael Carrick.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can provide cover in the left-back position if needed, but they are right-backs by trait. So, United could do with signing a new left-back before today’s 11 pm deadline.

The Daily Mail report that Man Utd have maintained an interest in signing Hall throughout this summer, but they consider purchasing him difficult. Newcastle have no intention of parting ways with him, having already sold big stars like Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Sandro Tonali.

With the player’s existing deal set to run until 2029, the Magpies aren’t in any rush to sell him and want more than £75m to keep the vultures away.

Hall to Man Utd

If they eventually fail to sign the Englishman this summer, they are planning to make a move next year as Man Utd did with Carlos Baleba.

The report state that apart from Hall, Man Utd are also interested in Brighton and Hove Albion defender Ferdi Kadioglu, Aston Villa’s Ian Maatsen and Racing Santander star Jorge Salinas. United even attempted to sign Alejandro Balde on loan, but the deal hasn’t progressed.

Hall is a technically gifted left-back. He is quick, comfortable playing out from the back, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, and is also efficient in defensive contributions.

The Englishman has shown glimpses of his qualities in the Premier League in recent years and isn’t a finished article yet. So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Man Utd should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the 20-time English champions eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services before the deadline.
