Manchester United eyeing January transfer for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha

Manchester United have not made the best start to the 2026/27 season in the Premier League with only four points on the board in three outings so far despite investing well on rebuilding their squad over the summer transfer window.

Following a relatively slow beginning to the campaign, the board is already chalking up plans to continue its first-team revamp in the winter transfer window next January and another midfielder’s signing has emerged on the radar.

German source Fussball Daten has reported that the Red Devils are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, who is valued at £86 million by the Bundesliga giants after a strong year on their books and a decent World Cup too.

The 25-year-old was the subject of interest from a number of Premier League sides, including Man United in the summer, but a transfer never materialised as all English clubs prioritised signing players from within the league itself.

Nmecha move not required in January

Manchester United’s interest in signing Felix Nmecha ahead of January comes as no surprise as Manuel Ugarte is suffering from an injury, whereas Youri Tielemans has not done a great job defensively in a double pivot after joining from Aston Villa this year.

Nmecha, however, is the kind of player to build a midfield around and Man United spending a huge sum of money on the German international might not be justified as early as in the winter transfer window without giving enough time to their recent signings to put their best feet forward.

There is still sufficient squad depth available to them in Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Kobbie Mainoo, while Michael Carrick is fairly flexible tactically and could move away from the double pivot if United continue to lack the required physicality and pace.

United’s focus must instead be on signing full backs as there is room for improvement on both sides, so it will be interesting to see if there are any plans being formulated by the board to revamp their defensive department.
