Manchester United are back in Champions League action for the first time since December 2023 as they kick off their European Cup campaign tomorrow evening at Old Trafford with a matchday one fixture against Azerbaijani side Sabah.
The Red Devils will be looking to make an impressive start to the competition on home soil, where they beat Ipswich Town 5-2 in the Premier League in their only game in front of their supporters so far in 2026/27.
Here is a look at the starting eleven Michael Carrick is likely to employ.
Goalkeeper – Senne Lammens is expected to keep his place in goal for the hosts.
Defenders – Diogo Dalot is in contention to play as the right back once again, whereas Luke Shaw could also retain his place on the left side of the back four. Lisandro Martinez might also start but Harry Maguire might make way for £52 million star Leny Yoro in the heart of the backline, with the Frenchman likely to make his first Champions League appearance for the Red Devils.
Dorgu on the left flank, Sesko up top
Midfielders – Kobbie Mainoo has been very good in the deeper-lying position in midfield for Manchester United and could be handed another start, whereas summer signing Youri Tielemans could also get the nod as his offensive qualities would be key against a side that may potentially play deep in their own half for much of the game.
Bruno Fernandes is set to be the attacking midfielder, and Bryan Mbeumo, who has a goal in his last two games for United, might feature on the right wing. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford could make way for Patrick Dorgu on the left flank.
Forward – Benjamin Sesko is expected to lead the line for United after scoring off the bench against Everton at the weekend.
Here is how the Red Devils’ line-up is likely to look on paper.
