Tottenham eye Davies -Jenas Swap Deal
By Rob Hart.
Tottenham are set to make a bid in the region of £7 million for want away Aston Villa defender Curtis Davies. Spurs chief Harry Redknapp has shown a strong interest in the England U21 defender as he looks to bolster his defensive options for their Champions League Campaign next season.
Tottenham have no shortage of strength in-depth in defensive areas but are concerned over the long term fitness levels of captain Ledley King and even more worryingly Jonathan Woodgate after he only made three appearances in the whole of last season due to a long standing groin problem, Davies will be no doubt be seen as more than adequate cover for the injury prone centre backs.
Davies was signed by Martin O’Neill for £11 million in August 2007 and was initially a success but a shoulder injury last season and the consistency of Richard Dunne and James Collins at the heart of the Villa defence has seen Davies fall down the pecking order at the Midland Club.
One option Redknapp may have to consider is to offer England central midfielder Jermaine Jenas to the Villa as part of the deal. Jenas has fallen down the hierarchy at White Harte Lane in recent months due to the emergence of the likes of Tom Huddlestone, Luka Modric and Wilson Palacios in the central midfield department. The midland club may see Jenas as an ideal replacement for James Milner who is strongly tipped to leave the club before the start of next season in a big money move.
