Arsenal Face Fight To Land La Liga Defender
Arsenal face a fight to try and land Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta this summer with his agent in Italy talking over a possible move to Serie A.
Despite the transfer window now being closed there will still be plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Fernando Amorebieta is a wanted man.
Arsenal have a fight on their hands to try and land Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta this summer with the players agent currently in Italy talking to clubs over a possible move to Serie A, according to Sky Sports.
The report claims the Venezuala international is out of contract in the summer and is set to leave on a Bosman free transfer after failing to agree terms over an extension, with Bilbao withdrawing their latest contract offer.
Sky Sports suggest that Arsenal are interested in bringing the 27-year-old to England but it seems he could be heading to Serie A instead with his agent believed to be in Italy talking with a number of clubs, with the likes of Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan thought to be among the interested parties.
Amorebieta has been with Bilbao since 2004 and has made over 250 appearances for the La Liga outfit, but it seems his time at the San Mames is almost up and there are no shortage of takers.

I’ve watched Amorebieta several times this season and feel he’d be a great addition to the Arsenal squad. At 6 foot 4 inches he’s probably most similar to Per Mertesacker but I’d consider him to be a more reliable defender than the big German. He’s far more mobile and aggressive in his play and I could see him being that ‘nasty’ Martin Keown-type defender we’ve been missing in recent years.
Plus, he’s available on a free! Which not only means he’ll be a bargain, but unfortunately it also means there’s going to be a lot of competition for his signature. Let’s hope we can lure him to the Emirates.
