South American To Undergo Arsenal Medical Ahead Of £26m Move, 5-Year Deal Agreed

Lucas Torreira will undergo his medical with Arsenal this week and complete a £26m move from Sampdoria after agreeing terms over a five-year contract

The summer transfer window is open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal are closing-in on Lucas Torreira…

Lucas Torreira will undergo his medical with Arsenal this week and complete a £26m move from Sampdoria after agreeing terms over a five-year contract, according to a report by the Mirror.

New head coach Unai Emery is desperate to strengthen his midfield options this summer and he’s looking to add a defensive midfielder to the squad as we’ve struggled to protect the back four in recent years. Granit Xhaka is more of a deep lying playmaker and has been criticised for his lack of defensive awareness at times.

With Santi Cazorla off to Villarreal and Jack Wilshere being tipped to leave when his contract expires later this month we need to sign at least one central midfielder and Torreira has emerged as a prime target in recent weeks with reports suggesting we’ve been in talks with Sampdoria.

The negotiations seem to have gone well as the Mirror claim the Uruguayan international has now agreed terms over a five-year contract after Arsenal settled on a deal worth £26m with Sampdoria for his signature.

The newspaper is now citing a report from the Daily Star that claims Torreira is scheduled to undergo his medical in Russia over the coming days as Arsenal look to wrap-up our latest signing by the end of the week.

Torreira is in the Uruguayan squad for the World Cup finals and there have been reports that Arsenal have sent a medical team out to Russia to oversee his medical before we complete our second signing of the summer.

Emery has already snapped-up right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus but there’s no doubt we need to strengthen in midfield and it looks as though Torreira is the man Arsenal chiefs have gone for.

The South American is only 5ft 6in but he’s known for his tenacity and desire to win the ball back so he certainly makes up for his lack of height in other departments, and I think he’ll be an excellent addition to the squad if we can get this deal over the line.
