Liverpool blew a two-goal lead to allow Sunderland to score twice in the final ten minutes and salvage a 2-2 draw at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
After a goalless first half, Liverpool finally broke the deadlock when James Milner’s cross found Roberto Firmino at the far post and the Brazilian forward made no mistake with a fine header back across goal to make it 1-0.
It looked as though the hosts were easing to a routine victory when Adam Lallana doubled Liverpool’s advantage as he tapped into an empty net to make it 2-0 in the 70th minute following good work from Firmino.
However, Sunderland got themselves back in the game as Adam Johnson reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 82nd minute with a long-range free-kick – although Simon Mignolet will certainly feel he should have done better to keep it out.
The Black Cats then stunned Anfield as Jermain Defoe did well to hold off Mamadou Sakho before firing home to make it 2-2 in the 88th minute and earn the visitors a hard earned point.
The draw leaves Liverpool down in eighth place in the Premier League table and a full ten points adrift of the top four so their Champions League hopes are fading fast.
