The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Tottenham are linked with Saul Niguez….
Tottenham Hotspur have made a bumper contract offer to Saul Niguez in an attempt to lure the £36m-rated midfielder away from Atletico Madrid this summer, according to the Mirror.
Spurs have enjoyed an excellent season and while they will be disappointed to have missed out on the Premier League title, they are still on course to finishing second, which would be their highest league finish in over 50 years.
Mauricio Pochettino is going to have to strengthen his squad ahead of their assault on the Champions League next season and it looks as though the Argentinean coach has some ambitious transfer targets in mind.
The Mirror are reporting that Spurs have identified Saul Niguez as a key signing and have offered the midfielder a lucrative five-year contract worth £6m-per-season after tax – which would make him their highest paid player.
Niguez has shot to prominence after scoring a stunning solo goal for Atletico Madrid during their Champions League semi final victory over Bayern Munich and it looks like he’s caught the attention of Tottenham.
However, Atletico are desperate to keep hold of the 21-year-old and the newspaper suggests that the La Liga outfit plan to hold talks with the players’ camp at the end of the season in a bid to tie him down to a new long-term deal – which would see his current £36m release clause increase significantly.
To make things even more difficult for Spurs, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo claims that Niguez has already informed the club that he wants to remain at the Vicente Calderon for the foreseeable future.
“Saúl has a contract with us,” Cerezo is quoted as saying by the Mirror.
“He’s a player from our academy and is Atletico through and through. From what I know, and from what he himself has told me, he wants to stay with us.”

I’m sure Pochettino will do all he can to try and lure the Spanish youngster to White Hart Lane but it’s going to be difficult as Niguez has been on Altetico’s books since he was a child and has risen through their youth ranks, so will probably feel a close affiliation with the club.
