The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Manchester United close in on a centre-back….
Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly has arrived in England to undergo his medical this afternoon after Manchester United agreed a £30m deal with Villarreal for his signature, according to the Daily Mail.
Jose Mourinho was confirmed as the new United manager last month and the Portuguese coach is expected to be extremely active in the transfer market this summer rebuilding the squad Louis van Gaal left behind.
A new centre-back to play alongside Chris Smalling next season is expected to be a priority as Daley Blind was forced to deputise at the back with Phil Jones struggling for form and fitness last year.
A surprising name emerged as a potential target over the weekend with Spanish outlet AS reporting that United were discussing personal terms with Eric Bailly after submitting an offer to Villarreal for his signature.
Bailly was left out of the Ivory Coast squad for their clash with Gabon on Saturday in order to sort out the proposed move to Old Trafford and it looks as though the deal has now taken a huge step closer to completion.
That’s because the Daily Mail claim that Bailly flew-in to Manchester today and will undergo his medical with United on Tuesday afternoon after the Red Devils agreed a deal worth £30m with Villarreal.
As long as there are no late problems, the newspaper says the 22-year-old will become Mourinho’s first signing after United moved quickly to snap up the talented defender amid interest from the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona, PSG, Arsenal and Man City.
Bailly only joined Villarreal from Espanyol in a £4.4m deal 18 months ago but the Yellow Submarine have decided not to stand in the players way as they’ll make a huge profit on his sale to United.

The young defender is known to be a strong, fast, physical centre-back and although he’s still something of a rough diamond who’s prone to the odd mistake, Mourinho has clearly seen his huge potential if he’s willing to sanction such an expensive purchase.
Bailly certainly isn’t the player many United fans have been calling out for and it is a bit of a surprise to see Mourinho opting for a young upstart rather than an established name, but the Ivorian is a huge talent who’s only going to get better at Old Trafford so it could prove to be a shrewd move from the Red Devils.
