Manchester United are set to test Real Madrid’s resolve with a £54million bid for Colombian international attacker James Rodriguez, according to El Confidencial
The summer transfer window is now open for business so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Manchester United are linked with James Rodriguez…
Manchester United are set to test Real Madrid’s resolve with a £54million bid for Colombian international attacker James Rodriguez, according to El Confidencial via the Mirror.
Rodriguez moved to Madrid from AS Monaco in a £56m deal back in 2014 after earning a move to the Spanish giants following some sensational displays for Colombia at the World Cup finals that summer.
The 25-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a vital part of Zinedine Zidane’s starting eleven and made just 17 La Liga starts last season while he was also left on the bench for key Champions League matches including the final against Atletico Madrid.
It’s led to intense speculation that the Colombian star could be on the move this summer with Manchester United among a whole host of clubs who’ve been strongly linked with a move in recent weeks.
It looks as though the Red Devils could be ready to step-up their interest as the Mirror are citing a report coming from Spanish outlet El Confidencial that claims United are ready to test Madrid’s resolve with an opening offer worth around £54m (€65m).
The newspaper says that Rodriguez’s agent Jorge Mendes – who is also Jose Mourinho’s agent – held initial talks with United chief executive Ed Woodward last week to discuss a potential move to Old Trafford this summer.
Who knows how much truth there is behind this latest report as with all the transfer news flying around these days it’s always best to take things with a pinch of salt but Rodriguez would be a superb addition if United could pull this off.
The playmaker hasn’t been given a chance to fulfill his obvious potential at the Bernabeu but I could see him flourishing if given a more prominent role at Old Trafford as he the talent to be a world class attacker.

However, Mourinho has indicated that he’s only looking to bring in one more player this summer with Paul Pogba widely reported to be his prime target so perhaps United will only make a move for Rodriguez if they fail to agree a deal with Juventus for the French international midfielder.
Mourinho is certainly building an impressive squad but if he can land a marquee name like Pogba or Rodriguez then I think many punters will see value in United’s current title odds with those betting at William Hill able to get a tempting 3/1. The former Chelsea boss has been a success wherever he goes and I wouldn’t bet against him taking the title back to Old Trafford this season.
