Man Utd Transfer News: Mourinho Plotting Big-Money Move For Portuguese Sensation

The summer transfer window is closed for another year but it’s now time to look back on those deals that didn’t go through and those that are being lined-up for the future. Today, Man Utd are linked with Goncalo Guedes….

Manchester United are eyeing a big-money move for Portuguese sensation Goncalo Guedes after stepping up their interest in the Benfica attacker over the weekend, according to the Mirror.

United boss Jose Mourinho splashed out over £150m during the summer on established names but it looks as though the ‘Special One’ is still planning for the future and has set his sights on one of his home countries most exciting young talents.

Guedes has been on the books at Benfica his entire career having joined the club as a child and progressed through the youth ranks before breaking in to the first team set-up back in 2014 where he was dubbed as the ‘new Cristiano Ronaldo’.

The 19-year-old forced his way in to Rui Vitoria’s plans last season, making 27 appearances in all competitions, and has now become a key part of the managers new-look side this season.

It appears the teenagers potential has caught the attention of United as the Mirror claim that Old Trafford officials stepped up their interest in Guedes after scouts watched him during Sunday’s 4-0 win over Feirense.

The newspaper says that United are now plotting a swoop for the attacker next summer with Benfica understood to be prepared to do business for the exciting prospect if a big-money offer is put on the table.

However, United aren’t the only club showing a keen interest as the Mirror say that scouts from Juventus, Valencia, Osasuna and Middlesbrough, as well as two German clubs, were also in attendance at Sunday’s game.

Guedes committed his future to Benfica after agreeing a new five-year deal but the Portuguese giants have a history of cashing-in on their best players if the money is right and it looks as though Guedes could be the next to make a big move to one of Europe’s top clubs.

We’ll have to wait and see whether United do in fact make their interest official over the coming months but Guedes is certainly an exciting prospect who looks to have a bright future ahead of him both at club and international level.

The youngster has already represented the senior Portuguese national team having played at every youth level but will play for the under-21 side in their European qualifiers during this international break.

Guedes has predominantly been used as a winger during his time at Benfica but he’s been played in a more central role during the opening games of this season so his versatility is sure to appeal to the likes of Mourinho.

There appears to be plenty of interest being shown in the attacker but United may have a trump card in any negotiations as the player is represented by Jorge Mendes – who also happens to manage Mourinho – so I’m sure they’ll be confident of winning the race for his signature.
