Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the final weeks of the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, the latest on Sergi Roberto’s future…
Manchester United and Chelsea are ready to trigger Sergi Roberto’s release clause with £36m bids after offering the Barcelona star lucrative contracts, according to a report in the Mirror.
Roberto has been with Barcelona his entire career having progressed through the La Masia youth academy and he’s racked up over 150 appearances for the first team.
The 25-year-old started out as a central midfielder but has developed in to a right-back in recent years and played the majority of his 47 appearances last season in the defensive role.
However, Roberto’s future at the Nou Camp has been called in to question this summer following the arrival of Nelson Semedo from Benfica while new boss Ernesto Valverde is also reportedly eyeing Alex Vidal as his first choice right-back this season.
It’s led to reports suggesting Roberto may look for a move this summer in search of regular action ahead of the 2018 World Cup and it seems the Spanish international could be heading to the Premier League.
Man Utd and Chelsea have been strongly linked with the player in recent weeks and the Mirror are citing a report from SPORT that claims the duo have now put forward lucrative contract offers to Roberto that would see him double his current salary.
The report goes on to say that United and Chelsea are now ready to pay £36m to trigger the defender’s release clause but they could yet face competition from Serie A champions Juventus as they are also keen.
Jose Mourinho is in the market for at least one more signing before the window closes and Roberto would provide stiff competition for Antonio Valencia in the right-back berth while he’d also be another option in midfield if needed.
Antonio Conte has made no secret of his desire to further strengthen his squad this summer and the Blues boss desperately wants a player to compete with Victor Moses in the right wing-back role, and Roberto would fit the bill perfectly.
However, the Mirror say that Barca have made it clear to the player that they want to keep him and are lining-up a new contract that would see his release clause removed.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but I think Roberto would be a superb signing if United or Chelsea were able to lure him to England this summer.
