Chelsea are prepared to offer Toby Alderweireld a lucrative double-your-money contract after opening talks with the Tottenham defender about a potential move
Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the final weeks of the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea are linked with Toby Alderweireld…
Chelsea are prepared to offer Toby Alderweireld a lucrative double-your-money contract after opening talks with the Tottenham defender about a potential move to Stamford Bridge, according to a report in The Sun.
Alderweireld has developed in to one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Premier League since joining Tottenham from Atletico Madrid two years ago after impressing during a loan spell at Southampton.
The 28-year-old has been in discussions with Spurs over a new deal but The Sun claim talks with his representatives have stalled because chairman Daniel Levy is refusing to increase the defender’s salary to the club’s £80,000-a-week ceiling.
It’s led to question marks over Alderweireld’s long-term future at White Hart Lane and it seems Chelsea could be trying to lure the Belgian international across London.
The Sun are citing a report from The Times that claims Chelsea have made an enquiry to assess Alderweireld’s interest in leaving Spurs and the Blues are ready to offer him a lucrative contract if he moves to Stamford Bridge.
The newspaper says the Premier League champions are prepared to double Alderweireld’s current £49,000-a-week wage meaning he could get around £100,000-a-week if he moved to Chelsea.
That sort of money wouldn’t be easy for a player to turn down, especially considering this could be Alderweireld’s last big contract before he gets the wrong side of 30 so he’ll want to secure as much money as possible.
The good news for Tottenham is that the player still has three years remaining on his current contract so they are under no pressure to cash-in any time soon but it will be a concern to Mauricio Pochettino that there appears to be growing unrest over the clubs wage structure.
Danny Rose recently criticised the north Londoners for not paying their players what they are worth in today’s market and it seems they are struggling to tie Alderweireld down to a new contract due to their strict wage policy.

It’s going to be interesting to see how talks with Alderweireld progress but it looks like Chelsea are ready to pounce if he decides he wants out of Tottenham and I think he’d be a superb signing if the Blues could somehow pull it off.
