Antonio Conte is ready to recall N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater for Chelsea’s huge Premier League clash with Manchester United this weekend, according to Football London.
The Blues welcome second-placed United to Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon and it looks like Conte is ready to mix things up in the middle of the park following the midweek Champions League defeat to AS Roma.
Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko have been over-worked in recent weeks while Kante and Drinkwater have been on the sidelines but they offered no protection to the Blues’ defence as Roma run out 3-0 winners at the Stadio Olimpico.
Kante has been sorely missed over the past month while he’s been nursing a hamstring injury that he sustained while away with the France squad during the last international break.
The 26-year-old was close to being included in the squad against Roma but was withdrawn at the last minute as he didn’t feel he was 100% fit yet having only recently returned to full training.
However, Kante is now set to make his first team comeback tomorrow and Football London claim he could be paired alongside former Leicester City team mate Danny Drinkwater.
The England international recently recovered from a calf injury that had hampered him since he made a £35m move to Stamford Bridge from Leicester in the summer.
Kante and Drinkwater haven’t started together since their days at the King Power but Football London claim Conte has been experimenting with them in his starting eleven during training in the build-up to tomorrow’s game.
The publication says the Blues boss is now expected to start Kante and Drinkwater against United in what could be a new two-man midfield – although there is a chance he could retain one of Bakayoko or Fabregas in a three to keep things tight against Jose Mourinho’s men.
It would be a big call by Conte to test out the Kante/Drinkwater pairing against United but he needs to try something as it clearly wasn’t working against Roma in midweek.
