Manchester United are facing a tough battle with Juventus to sign Jose Gimenez while Atletico Madrid haven’t given up hope of agreeing terms over a new deal, according to a report in the Mirror.
Gimenez has emerged as one of the most highly-rated defenders in Spanish football since breaking in to Atletico’s first team set-up in 2015 having joined the club from Danubio two years earlier.
However, the 22-year-old has lost his place in Diego Simone’s starting eleven with the Atletico boss opting for Stefan Savic and Lucas Hernandez to play alongside Diego Godin in recent months.
Understandably, the young centre-back isn’t happy with his situation at the Vicente Calderon and has so far refused to sign a contract extension despite Atletico’s best efforts to secure his long-term future.
The Uruguayan international’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season and the Mirror claim Atletico are trying to tie him down to a new deal that would include a buyout clause worth £57.5m [€65m].
However, it seems there is plenty of interest being shown in Gimenez as the newspaper is citing a report from Tuttosport that claims Manchester United are battling-it-out with Juventus to try and sign him on a free transfer next summer.
United have long been linked with a move for Gimenez so it’s no surprise to see them once again touted as possible suitors, particularly as Jose Mourinho is understood to be in the market for a new central defender.
Phil Jones appears back in favour this season but Mourinho has been experimenting with a back three at times and a dominant defender to play with Eric Bailly looks to be on the cards next summer.

Gimenez would be an excellent signing on a free if United could lure him to Old Trafford but it looks like they face some stiff competition as the Mirror say Man City, Inter Milan and Roma are also in the running along with Juve.
