Manchester United are showing a keen interest in signing Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld as Jose Mourinho looks to overhaul his defence this summer, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Alderweireld has been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League since joining Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015 following an impressive season on loan at Southampton.
However, the Belgian international’s future in north London is in doubt as Alderweireld has just 18 months left to run on his existing deal and is no closer to signing an extension despite his agents holding talks with Tottenham chiefs.
His current deal includes a one-year extension which would see him tied to Spurs until 2020 if the club decide to activate it, however, that contract also includes a release clause that would become active in the summer of 2019.
Should Tottenham activate the one-year extension then a release clause will be triggered that will allow Alderweireld to leave in 2019 for just £25m as long as the deal is completed before the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.
It means unless Spurs manage to tie Alderweireld down to a new long-term contract they may be forced to cash-in at market value this summer or risk losing him for just £25m in 2019.
The situation has alerted a number of top clubs and the MEN claims Man Utd are the latest team to show a keen interest in signing Alderweireld if he decides to leave Tottenham.
The Mirror reported yesterday that despite United’s impressive defensive record this season, Mourinho is planning to overhaul his centre-back options this summer with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones set to be sold.
Victor Lindelof has also been a disappointment following his £35m move from Benfica so Mourinho could be in the market for two new defenders this summer and it seems Alderweireld is a top target for the United boss.

We’ll have to wait and see how contract talks progress over the coming months but if Alderweireld doesn’t pen fresh terms this summer Spurs may have to sell and he’d be a superb addition if United were able to lure him to Old Trafford.
