Arsenal and Liverpool have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Max Meyer after the midfielder rejected Schalke’s latest contract offer, according to the Mirror.
Meyer progressed through the youth ranks at Schalke and emerged as one of the hottest young prospects in German football after breaking in to the first team set-up aged just 17.
He originally made his name as a winger but the 22-year-old has excelled since being converted in to a deep-lying playmaker at the base of midfield this season and is now a key part of Domenico Tedesco’s starting eleven.
However, Meyer’s future at the Veltins Arena is in serious doubt as his contract is due to expire in June and the Mirror claim he’s rejected Schalke’s latest £5m-a-year contract offer.
The newspaper says Meyer was told last summer that keeping Leon Goretzka was Schalke’s main priority as the club couldn’t afford to offer both players lucrative new deals but they’re now doing all they can to tie Meyer down to fresh terms after Goretzka agreed to join Bayern Munich.
It looks like their efforts may have come too late as the midfielder has so far refused Schalke’s attempts to tie him down and Meyer’s situation has alerted clubs here in the Premier League.
The Mirror claim that Arsenal and Liverpool are both showing a keen interest in luring Meyer to England on a free transfer this summer so the duo will welcome news that he’s knocked back Schalke’s latest contract.
Arsenal are expected to strengthen their midfield options this summer as Santi Cazorla is unlikely to play for the club again while Jack Wilshere is yet to sign a new deal and it looks like Meyer is firmly on their radar.
However, the Gunners will face competition from Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp is on the look out for a potential replacement for Emre Can as his contract is up in June and the German international is being tipped to join Juventus.

Meyer captained the German U21’s to European glory last summer and has also broken in to the senior German squad so he’d be an excellent long-term addition if Arsenal or Liverpool were able to win the race for his signature.
