The transfer window is closed but managers are working hard on their plans for the summer so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea join the chase to sign Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld…
Chelsea have joined Manchester United in the chase to sign Toby Alderweireld as Tottenham prepare to cash-in on the £44m defender this summer, according to a report by TeamTalk.
Alderweireld is regarded as one of the best defenders in world football having starred for Tottenham since joining the club from Atletico Madrid in 2015 following an impressive season on loan at Southampton.
However, the 29-year-old’s future in north London is in serious doubt as his current contract at Spurs has just over a year left to run and he’s no closer to agreeing terms over a new deal.
Tottenham have the option to trigger a one-year extension tying Alderweireld to the club until 2020 but that new deal would include a clause that will allow him to leave for just £25m in the summer of 2019 – as long as any transfer is completed at least 14 days before the closure of the window.
The situation has alerted rival clubs in England as TeamTalk are citing a report from the Mirror that claims Chelsea have now joined Man Utd in the race to sign Alderweireld this summer.
The report says the Belgian international is unhappy with Tottenham’s offer of £110,000-a-week as he wants at least £140,000-a-week and he could easily demand more from the likes of United or Chelsea.
And the duo have now been put on red alert as TeamTalk are also carrying a report from Belgian outlet HLN that claims Spurs have given up hope of trying to agree terms over a new deal and are ready to cash-in for £44m [€50m] this summer.
Jose Mourinho is expected to be in the market for a new centre-back with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones tipped to leave Old Trafford this summer and Alderweireld has emerged as a key target for the United boss.
However, it looks like Chelsea will now provide stiff competition as the west Londoners look to find a replacement for David Luiz – who’s expected to leave Stamford Bridge after falling out-of-favour.

Alderweireld would be a superb signing for either Chelsea or United if they could get a deal agreed but it remains to be seen whether Tottenham will be willing to do business with a direct rival this summer.
