Manchester United are targetting an audacious move to sign Marco Verratti as Jose Mourinho looks to reshape his midfield this summer with a £152m double swoop, according to the Mirror.
Michael Carrick has retired while Marouane Fellaini is set to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the month after failing to agree terms over an extension.
Therefore, Mourinho needs to sign two new central midfielders and the Mirror claim the United boss is planning a sensational move to lure Verratti away from Paris Saint-Germain.
United have held a long-standing interest in the Italian international and the newspaper says they’ll have to pay around £100m if they want to persuade PSG to cash-in this summer.
Verratti has forged a reputation as one of the best midfielders in the world since joining the Ligue 1 giants in 2012 while he’s also now a regular with the Italian national team.
The 25-year-old would be a wonderful signing if United could secure his signature and the Mirror claim Mourinho is hoping to pair Verratti with Fred at Old Trafford next season.
United have been strongly linked with the Brazilian international in recent weeks and the Daily Mail reported on Saturday that Fred was expected to undergo his medical next week after a deal was agreed with Shakhtar Donetsk.
The newspaper says United will pay an initial £43m to the Ukrainian champions but the deal is worth around £52m including various performance-based add-ons so the Red Devils are ready to spend over £150m to rejuvenate their midfield.
Fred is due to play for Brazil in a friendly against Croatia at Anfield on Tuesday night so the midfielder could take the opportunity to have his medical while he’s in the north-west.

The deal for Fred appears much closer to being completed than any potential move for Verratti but it would be a stunning double swoop if United could secure deals for both midfielders this summer.
