Man Utd Eyeing Real Madrid & Bayern Munich Stars As Mourinho Continues Overhaul
Raphael Varane and Jerome Boateng are on Jose Mourinho’s short-list as the Manchester United boss looks to sign a top class centre-back this summer
The summer transfer window is open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Jose Mourinho’s defensive targets are revealed….
Raphael Varane and Jerome Boateng are on Jose Mourinho’s short-list as the Manchester United boss looks to sign a top class centre-back this summer, according to to the Manchester Evening News via TeamTalk.
Mourinho knows he needs to strengthen his squad if United are to compete for top honours next season having finished a whopping 19 points adrift of Premier League champions Manchester City last season. United have already snapped-up right-back Diogo Dalot from Porto while a deal has also been agreed to sign midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.
However, Mourinho won’t stop there as he desperately needs to bring in a top class centre-back to act as a long-term partner for Eric Bailly with the future’s of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling in doubt. Victor Lindelof has also been linked with a move this summer after failing to establish himself following his big-money switch from Benfica last year.
United have been strongly linked with a move for Toby Alderweireld but TeamTalk claim the Red Devils are refusing to meet Tottenham’s £70m asking price having made it clear they won’t go above £55m for the Belgian international so Mourinho has drawn-up a list of alternatives.
The report is citing the M.E.N as saying that Real Madrid’s Varane and Bayern Munich star Boateng are among an eight-man list of targets being eyed by Mourinho as United look to splash out on a centre-back once again this summer.
Varane has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and Mourinho is a known fan of the French international’s as he was the man in charge when Madrid signed him from Lens in 2011 so a reunion could be on the cards if United could agree a fee with Madrid.
Boateng would also be a superb signing as he’s been one of the best central defenders in Europe since joining Bayern from Man City in 2011 and he’s helped the German giants win a whole host of honours including six Bundesliga titles and the Champions League.

However, it won’t be easy to land Varane or Boateng so Mourinho has several other targets in mind with the M.E.N, via TeamTalk, claiming that Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli, Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli of AC Milan, Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez and Caglar Soyuncu of Freiburg are also on his short-list.
