The summer transfer window is open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are linked with Diego Godin…
Manchester United are leading the race to sign Diego Godin with the Atletico Madrid centre-back available for just £18m this summer due to a clause in his contract, according to reports in Spain via TeamTalk.
Godin has been one of the best central defenders in world football since joining Atletico from Villarreal in 2010 and he helped Diego Simeone’s men win the La Liga title in 2014 while he’s also got 120 caps for the Uruguayan national team under his belt having played a key role in their progress to the last-16 of the 2018 World Cup.
However, Godin’s future at the Wanda Metropoliano is in serious doubt as he’s about to enter the final year of his contract and is yet to agree terms over an extension meaning he could be signed for just £18m due to a release clause in his deal.
Atletico are still in negotiations with the 32-year-old’s agents about a new deal but they fear he could be lured away with the promise of one final pay-day with his contract situation alerting some of Europe’s top clubs.
TeamTalk are citing a report from AS that claims Man Utd are leading the likes of Juventus in the race to sign Godin this summer as Jose Mourinho looks to sign a world class central defender.
Mourinho has already snapped-up right-back Diogo Dalot from Porto and midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk but the Portuguese coach knows he needs to further strengthen if United are to compete with Manchester City next season.
A new centre-back has emerged as a priority as he Victor Lindelof is being linked with a move away following a disappointing debut campaign at Old Trafford and Mourinho needs to sign a suitable partner for Eric Bailly as he’s failed to gel with Chris Smalling or Phil Jones.

Toby Alderweireld has been strongly linked in recent months but with Tottenham demanding big money for the Belgian, Mourinho could be tempted by a bargain swoop for Godin as despite his age, the South American would still be a superb addition for United if they could lure him to Manchester.
