Manchester United are ready to trump Tottenham by launching a £50m bid to sign Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire this summer, according to the Daily Mail via the Metro.
Maguire has enjoyed a meteoric rise since coming through the youth ranks at Sheffield United as he made his name during a three-year spell at Hull City before making a £17m move to Leicester in 2017 where he’s continued to enhance his reputation as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old’s impressive performances saw him called up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate and he played a key role in helping the Three Lions reach the semi-finals of the World Cup before Wednesday’s dramatic 2-1 defeat to Croatia.
Maguire’s display’s in Russia haven’t gone unnoticed as the Express reported earlier this week that Tottenham have registered their interest in signing the defender and were considered favourites to secure a deal.
Mauricio Pochettino has been quiet in the market so far this summer but the Spurs boss is expected to step things up over the coming weeks and Maguire could be viewed as a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld amid speculation over his future.
However, it looks like Tottenham will face stiff competition as the Metro are citing a report from the Daily Mail that claims Man Utd have now joined the chase to sign the England international this summer.
No doubt Leicester’s Thai owners will do all they can to keep hold of the defender but the newspaper says Man Utd are ready to pay £50m to sign Maguire – which would represent a huge profit on the £17m the Foxes paid just 12 months ago.
Jose Mourinho has signed three players so far this summer but a new centre-back is understood to be on the agenda as he looks to build a squad capable of competing with Manchester City next season.
Doubts persist over Phil Jones and Chris Smalling while Victor Lindelof has been linked with a move away from United following a disappointing debut season at the club so Maguire could be viewed as a potential replacement.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but United will have to act fast if they want to get a deal wrapped-up as Maguire will head off on a post-World Cup break next week and the transfer window closes on August 9th.
