Man Utd Make Formal £40m Offer As Reds Look To Wrap-Up 4th Summer Signing
Manchester United have tested Tottenham’s resolve by making a final take it or leave it £40m bid to sign Toby Alderweireld, according to the Mirror.
There is plenty of Manchester United and Tottenham gossip doing the rounds in the papers with the English giants linked with a whole host of star names ahead of deadline day. Today, the latest on Toby Alderweireld…
Manchester United have tested Tottenham’s resolve by making a final take it or leave it £40m bid to sign Toby Alderweireld this summer, according to the Mirror.
Jose Mourinho is desperately trying to sign another centre-back before the window slams shut on Thursday evening after being left disappointed by United’s lack of activity in the transfer market as they’ve only brought-in three new signings and Brazilian midfielder Fred is the only significant addition so far.
The Manchester giants have been linked with the likes of Yerry Mina, Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng in recent weeks but those deals have failed to progress and Alderweireld has been touted as a prime target in the media for several months.
The Mirror claim Tottenham have been demanding at least £55m for the Belgian international despite the fact he will be available for just £25m next summer due to a clause in his contract that will become active should Spurs trigger a one-year extension to his current deal that’s due to expire in 2019.
Alderweireld struggled to force his way back in to Mauricio Pochettino’s first team plans after recovering from a serious hamstring injury last season and has failed to agree terms over a new deal in north London.
So Spurs are under pressure to cash-in now before his value plummets next summer and the Mirror claim Man Utd have now tabled a final £40m offer for the 29-year-old’s signature.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy must now decide whether to accept the bid and cash-in on Alderweireld or lose him for £25m next summer as the defender has made it clear he won’t be signing an extension with the club.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days but I think Alderweireld would be an excellent signing for Man Utd if they can get a deal agreed as he’s been one of the best defenders in Europe over the past few years.
