Liverpool – Just Getting Started
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister hopes winning the Premier League title this season is “just the beginning of something great.”
The season for Liverpool has been nothing but exceptional in the Premier League.
Taking over the reins from Jürgen Klopp looked like a mammoth task for incoming Arne Slot.
Over his stint at the club, Klopp revolutionised the game, winning the hearts of every fan with Liverpool tickets.
But Slot used this to his advantage, bringing his flair and further uplifting this team to a title-winning side.
As Liverpool celebrated the title win after their 5-1 win against Spurs, Argentine Mac Allister and several other players spoke about the club’s next chapter.
Just the Beginning
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister hopes winning the Premier League title this season is “just the beginning of something great.”
Under Arne Slot, who took over from long-time coach JüJürgenlopp last summer, Liverpool dominated the domestic competition and lifted the title with four games to spare.
“I didn’t feel that we were going to win the league as easily as we did, because we are in a process that is just getting started.”
“For many, it was a big change. The coach and the team know that we can continue to improve, and hopefully this is the beginning of something great.”
Consistency has been key, according to Liverpool forward Luis Díaz.
“Many people didn’t believe in us, but we proved ourselves day after day from the start of the season,” the Colombia international added.
“We got the results, and we trusted the coach. Plus, the team is full of great players, and the results help a lot.”
Mac Allister, in his second season at Liverpool, has scored five league goals, including in their come-from-behind 5-1 win against Tottenham on April 27, which saw Liverpool crowned winners.
“The goal against Tottenham is the most important goal of my career,” the 2022 World Cup winner with Argentina said.
“I don’t know if it’s the best I’ve ever scored, but it’s definitely the most important.
“I’m happy with the season I’ve had. I think I’m in the best moment of my career and I can show in this great club what I can do. But I always said that I depended a lot on my team, and I met players who helped me a lot in my game.”
Díaz has found the back of the net 12 times in the league and agrees.
“We are nothing without our teammates,” he said. “I’m going through a great moment. Since I arrived, it’s been a time of great pride. I’ve always fought and worked for this…Luckily, I have good numbers.”
Liverpool also had hopes of winning the Champions League, but they were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in the round-of-16 stage in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 aggregate draw.
“We were unlucky in the draw; we got a great team,” Mac Allister said of PSG. “It’s hard to say, but we would have loved to have gone further. Either team could have reached the semifinals. They were better on penalties, but next year we’re going to fight.”
Slot Disappointed on Trent Departure
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has admitted everyone at the club is disappointed that Trent Alexander-Arnold has decided to leave at the end of the season.
On Monday, the England international confirmed his decision not to extend his contract which expires in the summer – something which had been expected for a while amid long-term links to Real Madrid.
This was one news item that all the fans with Liverpool tickets didn’t want to hear, but with the end of the season nearing, official news is out.
Slot has not spoken in person to the defender since the announcement – only via WhatsApp – but intends to talk to him on Friday to see how he feels about the fallout, which has received a mixed reception from fans and pundits.
“I think, like everybody who likes Liverpool and is a fan of Liverpool, we are disappointed with him leaving because not only is a good human being leaving the club, but a very good full-back is leaving us as well,” said Slot.
“But I also worked at clubs like AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord, where a very good player or multiple very good players have left the club every season, so I am a bit more used to it.
“But the experience I have-and by the way, this club as well-is that if a very good player is leaving, the next very good player will step up, and that probably will happen now.”
The reaction to the England international’s decision to end his 20-year association with the club has varied wildly among those with Liverpool tickets and pundits. Still, the Liverpool boss said it was not his place to tell fans how they should react.
Slot will speak to Alexander-Arnold when the players train on Friday about how he feels following his announcement, having only communicated by WhatsApp since last seeing the right-back on Monday.
“We are all disappointed, but Trent is the first one. He also said he would prefer us as a team and a club not to be too distracted by this announcement.
Alexander-Arnold’s decision leaves the Premier League champions light at right-back. Their only recognised senior player is 21-year-old Conor Bradley, who has 54 senior appearances to his name.
Slot has admitted that prohibitive transfer fees may hinder him from signing a ready-made replacement for Alexander-Arnold.
“I think it would be a surprise if I were to tell you now ‘Yes, we are looking at this and looking at that’,” said Slot.
“We don’t talk about contracts here, so we don’t talk about the positions or if we want to improve the team in certain areas.
“That’s the most challenging thing for a club like Liverpool if you just won the league, is that it is not easy to find better players than we already have.
“And if they are there, then they still need to be affordable and need to want to come.
It will be a tough transfer window for Slot, as he will need to find a like-to-like replacement for the exiting Trent Alexander-Arnold. He wants to start focusing on next season.
Liverpool tickets for the remaining league games are now available.
