With little over a week remaining in the January Transfer window, the gossip is hotting up. Today The Mirror have linked Tottenham with a move for Lazio striker Mauro Zarate, with the players agent confirming their interest.
For those of you who don’t remember him, Zarate spent a short spell in the Premier League on loan at Birmingham during the 2007-08 season. He did very well, impressing in a struggling Birmingham side and scored four goals in his 14 appearances during the second half of the campaign.
Well, the Mirror are reporting that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp certainly remembers him and is preparing to try and land the 24-year-old on loan for the rest of the season.
Zarate is owned by Lazio and is currently on loan at fellow Serie A side Inter Milan but is struggling to establish himself having failed to score in his 12 appearances so far. The report claims that Lazio would be willing to sell the Argentine for around £10m, but Spurs are hoping to take him on loan but only if they can do a deal on the players £120,000-a-week wages.
The players agent, Barry McIntosh, is also quoted in The Mirror as confirming that Tottenham are one of several clubs interested in brining the striker back to England:
“There is a lot of interest in Mauro.
“Spurs are among the clubs interested in bringing him back to England.
“He made a positive impact at Birmingham previously and his reputation has continued to grow.”
