Arsenal & Liverpool Set To Bid For €10m-Rated Europa League Winner

Arsenal and Liverpool are ready to go head-to-head over the signing of €10m-rated Sevilla centre-back Federico Fazio this summer, according to reports today.

Fazio was a stand-out performer for Sevilla last season as he played a key role in guiding the club to the Europa League with victory over Benfica in last months final.

Understandably, Sevilla boss Unai Emery is desperate to keep hold of the centre-back and the club have now offered him a lucrative new contract to try and keep him at the club. However, the 27-year-old has so far refused to commit his future to the Ramon Sanchez Stadium amid reports he’s attracting interest from a whole host of top European clubs.

The Daily Star claim that as well as Spanish giants Barcelona, Arsenal and Liverpool have both also made Fazio one of their key summer transfer targets and are now preparing bids for the Argentina international.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is expected to be busy this summer and a potential replacement for Thomas Vermaelen is likely to be on the agenda. The Belgian has been tipped to leave the Emirates due to a lack of first team football and with just one year remaining on his contract, Wenger may be forced to sell leaving him with a void to fill and it looks like he’s identified Fazio as the man for the job.

Brendan Rodgers is also expected to add to his backline after his leaky defence arguably cost his side the title last season, and the Liverpool boss could face a similar problem to Wenger with Daniel Agger’s future in serious doubt, and again the report suggests that Fazio is on the Northern Irishman’s radar.

So it looks like two of England’s biggest clubs are gearing up for a battle and the Star claim with Sevilla keen to keep hold of the defender, it will take a bid of €10m to persuade the La Liga outfit to cash in.

Whether either Arsenal or Liverpool will be prepared to meet that figure remains to be seen but it seems like a reasonable fee for a player of Fazio’s experience and he’d certainly be a useful addition for either club, but they may won’t try and get a deal done quickly before Barcelona decide to formalise their interest.
