Liverpool and Manchester United are facing a battle to sign Mateo Kovacic after AS Roma joined the race to sign the £44m Real Madrid midfielder this summer, according to reports in Spain via TeamTalk.
Kovacic came through the youth system at Dinamo Zagreb and was considered to be one of the most exciting young midfielders in Europe when he joined Inter Milan in 2013. He continued to enhance his reputation at the San Siro before earning a move to Madrid in 2015 but his time at the Bernabeu hasn’t gone according to plan.
The 24-year-old has failed to establish himself at the European champions and started just 10 La Liga games last season so it was no surprise when he went public with his desire to leave Madrid last week stating he wanted to play regular first team football.
The situation has alerted a number of clubs throughout Europe with TeamTalk claiming that Liverpool and Man Utd are among the teams to have expressed their interest in recent weeks.
Jose Mourinho has already snapped-up Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk while Marouane Fellaini has signed a new two-year contract extension but it seems United are still hoping to strengthen their midfield options this summer.
Kovacic has emerged as a potential target and the report says Mourinho had instructed United chiefs to meet the Croatian international’s £44m release clause in order to get a deal agreed swiftly.

Jurgen Klopp has also been busy strengthening his options in the middle of the park with Naby Keita and Fabinho both completing moves to Anfield but it seems the Liverpool boss is also eyeing Kovacic after failing to land Nabil Fekir.
However, Liverpool and United will face fresh competition as TeamTalk are citing a report from Cadena Cope that claims Roma have joined the chase to sign Kovacic after selling Radja Nainggolan to Inter Milan.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop once Kovacic returns from Russia where he’s been representing Croatia at the World Cup but I think he’d be an excellent signing for either Liverpool or United if they could get a deal agreed.
