Manchester United will look to avoid an upset when they take on Reading in the third round of the FA Cup at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime. Here is the line-up I think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will go with:
Goalkeeper: David De Gea could be given a well-earned rest if Solskjaer decides to give No.2 goalkeeper Sergio Romero a rare chance between the sticks this weekend.
Defence: The United boss has enjoyed a faultless start to life as manager and he’ll want to maintain momentum but this is also a good opportunity to rest some key players after the busy festive period. Therefore, I expect Luke Shaw to be given a breather with Ashley Young coming in at left-back while youngster Diogo Dalot could be given a chance to impress with Antonio Valencia making way.
Eric Bailly remains suspended while Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo aren’t fit so Phil Jones should keep his place. However, Victor Lindelof has played a lot of football lately and Solskjaer has hinted Matteo Darmian could play at centre-back so he could be recalled on Saturday.
Midfield: Paul Pogba has been outstanding in recent games but Solskjaer should take this opportunity to give him a rest while Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera could also make way after featuring heavily over the Christmas and New Year period.
Marouane Fellaini is pushing for a recall while Fred could also come back in to the starting eleven after being dropped for the win at Newcastle on Wednesday night. Andreas Pereira may also get his first start under Solskjaer with Scott McTominay still injured.
Attack: Marcus Rashford continued his excellent form with another goal and the MOTM award at St James’ Park but the youngster has been nursing a minor groin problem so Solskjaer is expected to give him a rest.
That will open the door for Romelu Lukaku to return to the side after scoring off the bench in the last two matches so the Belgian international will be keen to take his opportunity against Reading this weekend.
Alexis Sanchez made his return from injury with a substitutes appearance against Newcastle and the Chilean star is expected to start on Saturday while Jesse Lingard could be recalled with Juan Mata and Anthony Martial making way.
Here is how we think United will line-up:
