Manchester United have been dealt a fresh injury concern as Anthony Martial has been forced out of the France squad after aggravating a knee injury against Wolves.

Martial had only recently returned to the pitch after missing five United games with a groin injury that he suffered during the Champions League last-16 first leg against Paris Saint-Germain last month.

The 23-year-old made a substitutes appearance in the defeat to Arsenal last weekend before being recalled to the starting eleven for Man Utd’s disappointing 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final loss at Wolves on Saturday night.

Martial completed the full ninety minutes as United crashed out of the FA Cup at Molineux but it seems he aggravated a long-standing knee problem that’s hampered him throughout the season.

The France Football Federation have confirmed that Martial has been forced to withdraw from their squad ahead of their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Moldova and Iceland after feeling ‘severe pain’ in his knee at the weekend.

An official FFF statement, as per ManUtd.com, said:

“Anthony Martial is suffering from recurring problems in the right knee. He again felt severe pain in his right knee after Saturday’s match against Wolverhampton.”

Martial will now head back to Manchester to have the injury further assessed by United medical staff and to undergo treatment after being replaced by Atletico Madrid winger Thomas Lemar in the France squad.

It remains to be seen how long Martial will be on the sidelines for but his injury will be a concern for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he looks to get his side back to winning ways against Watford on March 30th.

The Man Utd boss has had to deal with a lengthy injury list in recent weeks with as many as 10 players on the sidelines but it looked as though the casualty list was easing with the likes of Jesse Lingard, Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic and Phil Jones joining Martial in returning to action recently.

However, Martial’s latest injury is a setback so Solskjaer will be praying it’s not serious and the forward is available for selection when United welcome Watford to Old Trafford after the international break.
