Manchester United are in talks over a potential £108m deal to sign Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann after his proposed move to Barcelona was put in doubt, according to the Independent.
Griezmann has developed into one of the best all-round forward’s in world football since joining Atletico from Real Sociedad in 2014 having contributed 133 goals and 50 assists in his 257 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side.
However, after years of speculation surrounding his future, the French international finally confirmed last week that he’ll leave the Wanda Metropolitano this summer and he was fully expected to join Barcelona.
However, the Independent claims that some of the hierarchy at the Nou Camp are having second thoughts over meeting Griezmann’s £108m release clause as they aren’t convinced he’ll fit in to Ernesto Valverde’s team and feel the money would be better spent elsewhere.
The situation has opened the door for Manchester United to swoop in and the Independent says talks between the Griezmann camp and United chiefs have now been initiated to discuss a potential deal.
The newspaper claims Griezmann’s brother is a Man Utd fan so that could have a bearing on the striker’s decision and it’s suggested that some key figures in European football believe Old Trafford is the Frenchman’s most likely destination this summer.
United are one of a select group of top clubs who could realistically afford to pay Griezmann’s £108m buy out fee on top of huge wages and the report says Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have no plans to move for the striker.
Therefore, if Barcelona do pull out of the running, it would leave Manchester United firmly in pole position to sign Griezmann and he’d be a hugely exciting addition to their squad if they could get a deal agreed.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is gearing-up for a busy summer after finishing sixth in the table this season and the United boss is looking to freshen up his attacking options with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial being linked with moves away.

Griezmann would go a long way to filling the void left behind if the trio were to leave as he can play out on the left wing or through the middle but we’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days and weeks.
