Manchester United will be looking to get back to winning ways when they take on Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday lunchtime. Here is the team we think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will select:
Goalkeeper: David De Gea will have been disappointed with his part in Crystal Palace’s goal last weekend but there is no doubt the Spaniard will retain his place between the sticks versus Southampton.
Defence: Man Utd have been dealt a blow after confirming this afternoon that Luke Shaw has been ruled out of the game against his former club due to a hamstring injury that forced him off against Palace.
Ashley Young replaced Shaw in the first half last week and is expected to start against Southampton while Aaron Wan-Bissaka should keep his place at right-back. He’ll be looking to celebrate his call-up to the England squad with a positive result on the south coast.
Harry Maguire wasn’t at his best last weekend but the world’s most expensive defender will obviously retain his place alongside Victor Lindelof on Saturday. Chris Smalling is set for a loan move to Italy so Axel Tuanzebe should keep his place on the United bench.
Midfield: Solskjaer could be tempted to mix things up in midfield after a disappointing result last weekend but Scott McTominay appears in favour under the Norwegian coach so he’ll probably keep his place.
Rumours linking Paul Pogba with a last ditch move to Spain refuse to go away but the Frenchman is expected to once again start in the middle of the park for Man Utd this weekend and I also expect him to be a United player when the European window closes.
Nemanja Matic is pushing for a recall but I think the Serbian international will have to settle for a place on the bench once again on Saturday. Andreas Pereira is another player who’ll be hoping to feature but I think Juan Mata could be given the nod in the advanced attacking midfield position.
Attack: Manchester United have been handed another blow with the news that Anthony Martial has been ruled out with a thigh injury so Solskjaer is going to have to make a change in attack.
Marcus Rashford is expected to be moved into the central striking role which would leave a void needing to be filled on the left but United don’t have too many options as Alexis Sanchez is off to Inter Milan.
Mason Greenwood is an option for the United boss but it’s not his natural position so I think Solskjaer may opt to move the more experienced Jesse Lingard out to the wing with Daniel James keeping his place on the opposite flank.
Here is how we think United will line-up:
