Liverpool injury update ahead of Chelsea: Klopp delivers double boost
Jurgen Klopp has offered an update on the fitness of Naby Keita, Alisson Becker and Divock Origi ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Chelsea.
Liverpool will be looking to maintain their perfect start to the new Premier League campaign when they take on Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
Ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge, Jurgen Klopp has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this morning and he’s provided a team news and injury update including the latest on Naby Keita, Alisson Becker and Divock Origi.
Keita has been on the sidelines since suffering a hip injury during Liverpool’s Super Cup clash with Chelsea last month but he’s been stepping-up his recovery in recent days and Klopp’s confirmed the midfielder will resume full first team training at Melwood today. However, no doubt the Guinea international will need time to build-up his fitness so he’s not expected to be involved against Chelsea.
Alisson suffered a serious calf injury during the opening stages of Liverpool’s opening Premier League game with Norwich City six weeks ago and Klopp says the goalkeeper is making ‘big progress’ in his recovery.
The Brazilian international enjoyed his first session with goalkeeping coach John Achterberg on Thursday but is yet to resume full training with the rest of the squad so is still on course to return to action at some point in October.
Origi missed Liverpool’s Champions League defeat against Napoli on Tuesday night after picking up an ankle injury during the win over Newcastle United last weekend. Klopp says the striker will be assessed ‘day by day’ but it seems unlikely Origi will be available to face Chelsea on Sunday.
Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com:
“Naby Keita is back in training at least, with the team. Today for the first time with the team.
“Ali is making big progress, but is still away. He had a proper session yesterday with John Achterberg, but is not in team training yet.
“Div, we have to see day by day, that’s how it was from the first day – how can he deal with the pain and stuff like that. We will see. It is pretty early, so I don’t know exactly what the medical department will tell me [today] about that case.
“I think it’s unlikely [he will be fit for Chelsea] but why should I rule him out? But it’s unlikely.”
Liverpool head to the capital this weekend sitting five points clear at the top of the Premier League table after winning all five of their games so far this season so Klopp will be desperate to cement their position with another victory over Chelsea.
