Can Spurs stand to lose Kane?
Tottenham Hotspur can expect to receive offers for star striker Harry Kane this summer after finishing outside of the top four. Can they afford to sell?
Tottenham Hotspur can expect to receive offers for star striker Harry Kane this summer after finishing outside of the top four.
The North London club have had the three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner on their books up to the age of 27 and are still to lift a trophy.
Kane owes it to himself to find a new club where he can lift some silverware for the first time in his career. Manchester City seem the ideal destination for him following Sergio Aguero’s departure to Barcelona.
The Citizens have won the Premier League for three of the past four seasons and ran away with the title, 12 points ahead of runners-up Manchester United last season. Adding Kane to their squad would only strengthen them further.
Manchester City have already been made the bookmakers’ odds on favourites for the 2021-22 Premier League title. And placing a bet on the upcoming season at these new betting firms would give you a better price today before they sign Kane or another world class striker.
Whoever arrives at the Etihad Stadium will have the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling supplying them with chances.
The 27-year-old has scored a remarkable 166 goals in 242 Premier League games for Spurs, who have still only managed to finish in the top four in four of the seven seasons he has been a regular starter for them.
It seems inevitable that Kane will leave Tottenham in his prime and this summer is looking very likely. It wouldn’t come as a great shock to many fans as this story has been brewing for some time.
Tottenham do have a strong squad but losing Harry Kane would be a huge blow – he’s simply irreplaceable. The only other strikers in world football on his level right now are Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe and none of those will be replacing him.
They have been here before though when Gareth Bale made his world transfer record move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2013. But the funds weren’t spent too well, with the likes of Roberto Soldado, Paulinho and Nacer Chadli all proving to be flops.
Christian Eriksen was one of the better signings, whilst Erik Lamela has been hit and miss. It wouldn’t be until the end of the 2015-16 campaign that they qualified for the Champions League again, and that was off the back of Kane’s goals more than anything.
With Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool all looking excellent right now, not to mention Manchester United finished second last season, losing Kane this summer would surely end any dreams of Spurs finishing in the top four in 2021-22.
Nuno has recently been appointed as their new manager and will have the task in finding Kane’s replacement should he leave this summer. The Portuguese manager was very successful with the signings of Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota at his previous club Wolves. But the expectations will be higher at Spurs and the pool of talent to purchase will be much thinner.
The new manager does inherit a number of top players though – a defence that includes Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez. Midfielders including Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Lucas Moura and Giovani Lo Celso. Not to forget that Son Heung-min is a frequent goalscorer in his own right. Without Kane, the team will need Steven Bergwijn to stand up, as well as signing an out-and-out striker.
Tottenham will have to accept their fate. Failure to compete for the Premier League title or even lift a single trophy over the past seven years means Harry Kane has every right to move elsewhere.
